Aloka Chatterjee had her education in Calcutta, Washington, New York and London. She graduated from London School of Economics with an honours degree in Economics, Political Science, International Law & Relations. She was an active member of LSE cultural and social life. After returning to India she taught these subjects at Indraprastha College, Delhi. After moving to West Bengal, Aloka taught English and History at Loreto Convent. A few years later, she went on to be a co-founder and eventually the Principal of the first nationally accredited school in the town.
Aloka was widely read in history, economics, political science, and art. She liked both western classical music and Rabindra Sangeet, learning the latter while studying in Calcutta. When staying in Burnpur and at her home in Santinketan, Aloka also took a keen interest in gardening.
